Our four legged friend Elsie visits Oaken Holt

Residents at Oaken Holt care home in Farmoor, Oxfordshire enjoyed their weekly visit from the PAT (Pet Therapy) dog Elsie this week.

Elsie is a firm favourite of our residents and her arrival is eagerly anticipated every week. Elsie is such a gentle dog, well behaved and very friendly and visits all the communal lounges and then residents in their rooms.

It’s always a lovely visit for everyone on the day as they have got to know Elsie very well and she is a star feature on our activity schedule. She is so well behaved with our residents and where appropriate, seeks out a pat, a stroke or even a cuddle but for those less mobile and/or frail, she knows to be calm and is quite content just to sit there and be given attention, even if it just someone talking to her. All attention is good, which of course, she gets lots of.

Some of our residents, having been dog owners in the past often comment on their memories and how great it is for them to connect with Elsie.

At Oaken Holt we understand and appreciate the benefits of Pet Therapy. Animal assisted therapy is recognised as an occupational therapy within psychology and the sensation of being able to touch, reach out and hold an animal, some find exciting and motivating and others very calming and soothing. Seeing Elsie stimulates conversation and help with our residents’ wellbeing which is what we strive for.

We’re already looking forward to their next visit.
