Flag dedication for a special soldier at Gildawood Court

A longstanding Salvation Army member, now a resident at Gildawood Court care home in Nuneaton, has been honoured for his contribution to the movement.

Brian Devlin, aged 78, had a special flag dedicated to him at a service on Sunday 17th July at 2pm at The Salvation Army in Bedworth, Warwickshire.

As a personal friend of the family, Sue Barnett, Administrator at Gildawood Court  was honoured to be asked to represent the home and Brian, on behalf of his wife and daughter.

The flag carries an original Salvation Army motto, Blood & Fire, which harks back to its Victorian origins.

A familiar face in Bedworth, Brian could be seen twice a week in the town raising money for The Salvation Army by selling The War Cry magazine. He also carried the flag at marches and events, including Armistice Day parade. On one occasion a large group of children called out his name – it transpired that he was their lollipop man.

Brian was not able to attend the service, however former colleagues spoke of Brian’s ability to talk and make people laugh.

John Vale, Salvation Army Captain, said:

“The flag will be sewn to fit a pole by Pearl, Brian’s wife, to be used for future events and special occasions.”

Gildawood Court offers residential, nursing and dementia care – including long-term care, trial stays, short-stay and convalescent care – for up to 60 elderly residents.
