Elvis Day at Mill House

On New Year’s Day the residents at Mill House Nursing Home in Chipping Campden voted for their favourite music, the idea being that the one chosen would have an afternoon dedicated to them where residents could listen to music and discuss the chosen artist.

Following lots of animated discussion, the ratings were, in third place Buddy Holly, in second place the Beatles but a winner by only two votes was Elvis. However, as Paul and Mary the Mill House activities team explained things did not go exactly as planned.

The day seemed to “just snowball” said Paul. “We mentioned on social media that we would be having an Elvis afternoon and a lady from our local community said she would make us a cake. We had no idea until it arrived just how amazing it would be. Then a student from Chipping Campden school (Jamie) let us know he was a Elvis fan and he offered to come in and help host the event which was fabulous. Also the family member of a resident said they would write a quiz.”

Mary added it was quickly becoming evident that an afternoon would not give us time to give the offers of help the attention they deserved, so after discussion with the residents, the Elvis afternoon became an Elvis FULL DAY.

One of our residents commented on the cake; “it was even Elvis themed!”

Then to top it all local entertainers “Mind-Song” came in and entertained and sang for the residents.

Paul and Mary added that the day did not go as planned as initially we were only expecting 12 residents but 21 turned up after news of the ever expanding activities went around our home. So undeterred, or should we say ‘not shook up’, we moved all the tables out of the lounge and brought in extra chairs to accommodate everyone to ensure no one missed out. We took it as a huge compliment that so many residents wanted to get involved and it was such a fun day for everyone and if anyone is interested Mary’s team won the quiz much to their delight.

What started as an afternoon music event, became a true community spirited day; involving a local cake maker, a local singing group and a volunteer from the school.
Community spirit is very much alive at Mill house and our residents could not be happier. So who is up for the next event? Buddy Holly anyone?
