Arts and Crafts at Moorlands

The residents at Moorlands had fun with some creative drawing this morning in one of our regular Arts and Crafts session.

Arts and Crafts is a really popular activity here at Moorlands and one which our residents keenly look forward to. Being an activity which is open to those with limited dexterity, low vision for example as well as some of our more active residents, it really encourages a sense of community by bringing them all together for a chat over their drawing boards encouraging friendships, contributes to their self-esteem and develops social interaction. It’s also an excellent way for stimulation and fosters a real sense of accomplishment and pride in their creations which they can then proudly display and show their families and friends.

Tracey Jepson, Home Manager said

“It’s a great activity which they all thoroughly enjoy. They share their work with each other, as well as their friends and families and some even stated they felt they learnt something new.”

As we find for a lot of our residents, crafting was a pastime they previously enjoyed and they love to share their stories. For others, they came to later in life and discovered the joy of being creative and unleashing their inner artist.

For example, one of our residents, Mrs LM has always had a creative streak and when she was living at home loved to make and decorate celebration cakes. She was also a very skilled seamstress and not only made her own clothes but even crocheted her own wedding dress!
