A Breath of Fresh Air

Residents from Bradbury House in Essex took part in a specially organised dementia ‘walk and talk’ event recently.

Hylands Park in Chelmsford played host to the day that was organised by ‘Dementia Adventure’. The walks are intended to provide a breath of fresh air for people living with dementia and their partners or carers as it is thought that being out in the open can provide real health benefits.

Over half of the residents from Bradbury House went along with many Carers coming in on their day off to help.

After a lovely walk, two of the residents got the opportunity to have a ride in an open topped car and the day was finished by a lovely picnic underneath a beautiful old oak tree.  Home Manager Nikki Leaney said that this is the second time they have taken part in the event and told us that it really benefits the residents:

“Resident feedback was wonderful.  One lady told me one that the only thing we forgot was the wine so we promised to add it to the shopping list for next year!  This is the second time we have arranged to take part in the event and it has proven to be of excellent therapeutic benefit, especially for those with dementia.”

The walks are intended to be gentle strolls and are wheelchair friendly.  The organiser, Director of Dementia Adventure Neil Mapes said:

"We believe in thinking differently about dementia. We believe people can live well with dementia and remain connected to nature and enjoy a sense of adventure."

Located in the heart of the historic town of Braintree, Bradbury House is the very first home in the Caring Homes family. The home dates in part from the 17th century and, following a comprehensive and sympathetic conversion, retains many original features whilst also providing an outstanding residential care setting.
