Claydon House has a new extension

The residential care home Claydon House, in Lewes, has recently undergone extensive refurbishment and has a brand new extension, the Admiralty, that has been purposefully designed to help those with dementia.

Claydon House is a beautiful Victorian property that has been sympathetically extended and converted. The Admiralty extension has been named after the original building; previously a private residence called Admiralty House, the name of the new extension is an acknowledgement of the house’s prestigious heritage and the area’s sea-faring tradition.

The main building benefits from modernised ensuite rooms with beautifully restored décor and frontage. Thanks to the new Admiralty extension Claydon House now offers residential, nursing and dementia care with individualised support provided by the highly dedicated, trained and qualified staff.

The wealth of original Victorian features have been retained throughout the building, along with spacious communal areas including a lovely conservatory which has views across the garden. Claydon House benefits from state-of-the-art facilities to ensure high standards of comfort and care, and residents can enjoy beautiful surroundings and a home-from-home atmosphere.

The Claydon House extension incorporates benefits aimed at reducing the impairments of dementia sufferers. In conjunction with the University of Stirling, a leading authority in research on the effect of the surrounding environment on dementia sufferers, the extension benefits from specialist features to support an improvement in quality of life and retention of dignity. To help residents identify their rooms there is a memory box at each resident’s door, state-of-the-art signage depicting what’s behind each door to avoid confusion, flowing corridors for clear uninterrupted line of vision, and pressure sensitive flooring in bedrooms, which lights a pathway to the bathroom should a resident get out of bed at night.

Rachel Bekeart, Care Home Manager of Claydon House, says: “The new extension and refurbishment is wonderful. Residents love the way that many of the original features have been retained, whilst benefiting from state-of-the-art facilities. We pride ourselves on providing residents with the highest standard of care, tailored to their individual needs, and being able to do this in such beautiful surroundings is a real bonus.”

For those wanting a comforting winter getaway, Claydon House has a variety of respite breaks, so local residents may sample the facilities, perhaps before joining on a more permanent basis.
