Extension and Refurbishment Programme in Great Cornard, Sudbury, Opening Summer 2007

Caring Homes is the largest provider of private care homes in the UK and takes enormous pride in its care at two delightful homes near Sudbury.

Hillside House at Great Cornard, near Sudbury is a charming retirement home where residents have their very own place in the sun with the completion of a luxurious new extension.

The new, spacious brick built conservatory-style sun lounge has French doors leading on to a sunny decking area. Care home manager Janet Warner said: “It is a really lovely place, where everyone can sit and soak up the sunshine all year round and also can also take their meals, if they wish.” There is also a second decking area off the refurbished dining room too.

Hillside has recently added three new en-suite bedrooms and a modern state- of-the-art bathroom. The new rooms are all equipped with wet rooms to allow residents to take a shower either sitting or standing. The new bathroom, meanwhile, is fitted with a high tech bath, which lowers elderly residents safely into the bathtub at the touch of a button.

Mellish House, just next door, is one of the few care homes in the area specialising in caring for people with Dementia. The purpose built care home opened 10-years’ ago and currently caters for 34 people with Dementia. Very soon it will benefit from the addition of a 14 bed, state-of-the-art extension due to be opened shortly.

Care home activities organiser Glenda Davison, spends many hours with her beloved residents, listening to the tales of their past. She says: “Our residents at Mellish House all suffer from Dementia and a major symptom of this condition is memory loss. Because of this we make a point of encouraging residents to talk about their past lives to help them with their memory problems. It was on one of these occasions that we found out about Fred’s medals.” Glenda continues: “Fortunately, Fred managed to remember his rank number and we also had his date of birth. Armed with this information we contacted the local branch of the Royal British Legion who managed to find out all about the four medals Fred was entitled to.”

Fred will receive his medals at a special ceremony that has been arranged for this extraordinary gentleman. David Land, Chairman of the Sudbury and District Branch of the Royal British Legion added: “It is true that many people didn’t claim their medals after the war because it was all so traumatic that they wanted to put it all behind them.”

After tracing Fred’s long lost medals, care home staff discovered that the family of another resident, Patrick McCarthy, had also recently claimed his wartime medals. Mr McCarthy’s five medals, which include the Africa Star and 8th Emblem, The Italy Star and the 1939 - 1945 Star, will also be presented in May.

The Caring Homes Group offers short- and long-term care for anyone wishing to sample before they buy.
