Mellish House in Great Cornard near Sudbury, a care home for people with dementia, is hosting an open day on December 7th to celebrate the recent extension and refurbishment of their accommodation and dementia services.
Local MP Tim Yeo will be there to perform the official opening of Mellish’s newly designed environment that incorporates various features to reduce the impairments that many people with dementia suffer. Statistics show that 75% of people in care homes have some level of dementia, and in line with the latest research from University of Stirling, who has found that the surrounding environment has a major effect on the well being of people with dementia, the Caring Homes Group has implemented steps to make environmental changes to ten of their specialist dementia care homes, starting with Mellish House.
Mellish House is a purpose-built care home providing individualised care for residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. The new refurbishment includes features such as glazed doors to give clear pathways, and glass-fronted cabinets, making navigation easier and reducing the anxiety caused by barriers. Touch sensitive floors, providing safe and well lit pathways at night, and brightly coloured sanitary ware in bathrooms also help reduce the difficulties dementia sufferers can encounter in day-to-day life.
