Sam shines to make national award shortlist

The staff and residents of local Heffle Court care home were celebrating this week at the news that popular Activities Coordinator Sam Keylock (pictured to the left in the above photograph) has been shortlisted for a National Care Award.

As part of her role as Activities Coordinator, Sam plans and delivers a wide range of activities, both on a group basis and providing one to one support for those who cannot participate due to failing health.

One particularly innovative idea involved the introduction of an iPad to Heffle Court, which has allowed residents to speak to their far-off loved ones over Skype. The iPad is also used as a reminiscence and sensory tool during activities as part of the recently introduced ‘Living’ programme.

The wide-ranging activities and initiatives established by Sam this year have been heralded beyond the walls of the Heathfield home, with BBC Radio 2 making mention of the ‘Memory Moments’ at Heffle Court. The interactive setup consisted of a reminiscence music corner and pub, which were made possible thanks to the involvement of several community groups.

Heffle Court was also featured in Napa Living Life’s Inspirations Magazine where they featured the ‘Retro Ice Cream Afternoon’ run at the home. This was alongside the home recently taking the runner-up spot in the national NAPA ‘Away Challenge,’ which showcased care homes that offered their residents frequent and varying opportunities to get involved in their local communities.

Sam has quickly become an integral part of the holistic support provided at the home, as Heffle Court Manager, Debby Potter explained:

‘Sam has been with us for just over a year, in which time she has spent time getting to know each of our residents and understanding their needs, enabling her to find new and exciting ways to engage those we support.

Caring Homes places a high emphasis on effective activity provision and Sam personifies this commitment through her role. She is dynamic, innovative and empathetic and extremely deserving of this nomination. We will certainly all have their fingers crossed that she wins!’

Sam attended an interview with the judging panel on Friday 18th October and will find out if she has won at a glitzy ceremony at the London Hilton on 29th November.
