Lest we forget

On Sunday 8th November our activity co-ordinator, Felicity, organised a Remembrance Sunday event at Ivy Court.

After holding the silence, and watching the London parade and the Queen’s address on the TV, the residents and their relatives were able to come together to chat and discuss personal stories from the various wars over coffee, finger sandwiches and scones. One of our upstairs residents, Judy, read aloud some of the famous war poems from WWI and WWII for the group; these included Binyon’s For The Fallen, and of course, MacRae’s In Flanders Fields.

For those that wanted a little more light relief we provide table entertainment in the way of Remembrance themed word searches, colouring pages and we even had a go at writing our own acrostic poems!

Rev Simon Ward from one of the local churches came in to hold a short service for us, and be on hand for anyone that might want to chat. The residents knew all the hymns and joined in with strong voices. During the service anyone that wished to plant a cross (made out of lollipop sticks) was invited to do so, whilst they prayed for anyone they had lost.

On such a solemn day it was nice to see the residents and their relatives joining together to support one another.
