Friday Film Club at Wytham House

Residents at Wytham House and Oaken Holt care homes enjoyed their regular afternoon activity, the ‘Friday Film Club’ which is held at 2.15pm every week.

Held in the purpose built Cinema room at Wytham House, residents from the home were joined by some of their relatives, as well as residents and relatives from Oaken Holt nursing home, part of the Caring Homes family. Wytham House is located on the Oaken Holt estate so both homes often collaborate on activities so all their residents can benefit from a varied events schedule and socialise together.

Our residents were treated to a showing of ‘On the Moonlight Bay’, with the sounds of Doris Day and co-stars singing “We were sailing along on Moonlight Bay, We could hear the voices ringing…” filtering through parts of our home.

The Friday Film Club at Wytham House is a very popular addition to our activities as it provides our residents with a great opportunity to be part of something fun, creative and sociable. We choose old favourites and musicals seem to be a great hit and often requested. We are often regaled with them all singing along with great gusto to the old tunes. Playing movies that they remember, is really beneficial as it brings back many so many memories for them and is one way that we as a home, can help our residents to feel a part of something, not apart from everything. Movies make for recalling great memories; the plot, actors, music can be the trigger and why a particular movie sticks in our memory. When a memorable movie is shown, it can stir positive memories and inspire good feelings about the caregivers and loved ones in their lives.

Inclusion is a central aim of our film club and we can see the benefits for our residents when we see big smiles appearing on their faces and them joining in with everyone and being more emotionally receptive. Watching movies cuts across all ages, genders, levels of mobility, etc and often encourages much anticipated debate both before and after the showing.

We are looking forward to next Friday and can’t wait to find out what’s up next week.
