Fergus McGregor plays at Oaken Holt

Residents and staff at one of our Oxfordshire care homes were treated to a special piano concert with a difference recently.

11 year old Fergus McGregor has been playing the piano since he was five.  He suffers from Synaesthesia which means he ‘sees’ the music as colours so as well as playing other people’s music, he likes to compose pieces that he thinks make colourful patterns.

Fergus was invited to play at Oaken Holt after a staff member ‘discovered’ him whilst on a day trip with residents to St Hilda’s College in Oxford for a Moving and Musical Concert.  Fergus played Mozart and everyone was so impressed that they asked him to play at the home.

On the day of the concert, everyone was excited and a large crowd had already gathered but Fergus didn’t seem overwhelmed.  He had a quick drink and asked his father if he could turn the pages of his music.

Many of the staff and residents commented that they had never heard such beautiful music played out such a rickety old piano and it was hard to believe that this little boy was playing music with such emotion and beauty.

Oaken Holt Manager, Bernie Allen told us:

‘Many of the residents shed a tear and not one resident moved from their seat for the whole hour that he played.  Fergus played an array of music from Mozart to The Beatles and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it.’

During the concert, a resident who loves to draw sketched a picture of Fergus playing the piano.  Fergus was presented with it at the end of the performance and told everyone that he would treasure it.
Although Fergus did not ask for any fee, Liz, the activities co-ordinator presented him with a gift voucher.

Fergus will be going to Boarding School in Manchester in September to study music, but everyone at the home is hopeful that he’ll return to play again at Oaken Holt in the future.
