Battle of Flowers for L’Hermitage and Beaumont Villa

Residents at L’Hermitage and Beaumont Villa care homes in St Peter, were once again delighted to celebrate Jersey’s Annual Battle of Flowers Parade which took place on Thursday 11 and Friday 12 August.

At L’Hermitage, eight of our residents were thrilled to attend the parade itself accompanied by members of our care team, whilst those remaining in both homes enjoyed a Battle of Flowers themed buffet. Our Chef tantalised everyone’s taste buds with a selection of smoked salmon, roast beef and homemade salads followed by mouth-watering cakes to rival any afternoon tea.

Everyone was very excited in the lead up to the day and spent lots of time discussing what they would see; the beautiful sights, smells and sounds of the parade, to see Miss Battle of Flowers, who would win the Prix d’Honneur prize, and they were not disappointed.

First staged in 1902 in celebration of a Royal Coronation, the Jersey Battle of Flowers has since grown over the past century and more to become one of the largest floral carnivals in Europe and without doubt a major highlight in Jersey’s varied summer calendar of festivals and events.

The Battle began as a flower parade, but along the route the flowers were torn off and thrown to the spectators. They threw them back, and the Battle was born.

The parishes throughout the island hand make and cover floats with thousands and thousands of flowers. There are numerous prizes awarded by an independent judging panel, including best set design, best costume, and animation. However, it is the major prize of Prix d’Honneur that everyone wishes to win.

In the months leading up to the battle fierce competition takes place within the parishes leading to a final island completion to crown Miss Battle. She is our carnival princess and reigns for a year, on the actual battle day she is accompanied by a celebrity as Mr Battle – this year it was X factor winner Joe McElderry.

All in all it was a fabulous day for everyone at L’Hermitage and Beaumont Villa care homes and we are all eagerly looking forward to the Jersey Battle of Flowers Christmas Parade, held during Jersey’s popular annual Fête dé Noué in December, which is a firm favourite with our residents.
