What do care homes do?
Care Homes are designed to help support people who find it difficult to live alone. Depending on your needs there are different types of homes that will provide the service you need. These homes include:
- Residential Homes for people with social, emotional and personal care needs
- Nursing Homes for people with these needs who would also benefit from nursing support
- Dual Registered Homes which offer both types of care
- Dementia Care Homes for people living with a form of dementia
- EMI Homes for people living with a mental illness
Different care homes will offer personalised care packages specific to each resident, including respite care, plus comprehensive short and long term stays.
All homes have specially trained staff who are on hand 24 hours a day to meet the needs of their residents. They are registered and are regularly inspected by the national care regulators to ensure that they meet current care regulations: the Care Quality Commission in England, Healthcare Improvement Scotland and the Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales.
What kind of care do I need?
Finding the right care home is not just about finding a home that is warm, friendly and welcoming, although these are very important factors. Just as important is ensuring that the home you choose can meet your care needs, both now and in the future.
The best person to ascertain your care needs is, of course, you. However, professionals such as your GP and your local social services team can provide very helpful advice on what level of support you may require now and moving forward.
Once you have established the type of care you require, you can then look at homes that provide the right level of care, enabling you to make an informed choice safe in the knowledge that the home you eventually decide upon will be the right one for you.
