How do I find the right Care home?

It is important to know the level, and type of care that you need to ensure your chosen home can provide the services you require.

It is also important to think about how your care needs may change over time to ensure the home is also suitable in the future, having to move to another care home as your initial choice, is no longer able to meet your needs can cause allot of upheaval which is not necessary if you make the right decision first time around.

Your GP will be able to help you understand the level of care you need.

Your local Social Services department can also assess your needs and suggest the level of care you require.

Once you are confident that you know the type of home that can meet your needs there are other factors to consider.

Care is not tangible, and it can be easy to be impressed by thick carpets, beautiful furnishings etc, but these features go no way towards ensuring good quality care, hence a homes reputation is of prime importance, talk to people who are associated with care, it is highly probable that a friend of relative of yours will have already looked at care homes, be involved with care homes etc.

If this is not the case, try all or some of the following:

1. Talk to your local Social Services department, and ask them for a list of care homes within the area.

2. Talk to your GP – they have probably known you for a number of years, and know the type of home that would not only suit you, but they will have knowledge of homes within the area.

3. Visit “Our Homes” and search for a Caring Home in your area, where you can speak to a registered nurse manager who can provide you with practical advice and explain whether or not they are able to meet your needs.

Caring Homes recently quoted in Caring Business Magazine as a company that “Does what it says on the Tin – It Cares!” is one of the only care home operators who ensures that every care home manager is a registered nurse – means that you can get advice from people who are qualified to care – and not business people!

4. There are also a number of charities who can not only help you to find the right type of care homes, but also will be able to offer you advise on the best way to fund your care.
